How to safely prepare your heavy appliances for moving day

By Henry Donald

Introduction

Moving major household appliances like refrigerators, washing machines, and ovens involves much more than simply lifting them onto a truck. These units house sensitive electrical components, mechanical systems, and fragile glass surfaces that can easily fail if subjected to harsh vibrations. Failing to prep them correctly can lead to costly mechanical damage or, worse, internal leaks that ruin your other belongings during transit.

Disconnecting and deep cleaning appliances

The preparation process must begin at least 24 to 48 hours before the moving truck arrives. For refrigerators and freezers, this means completely clearing out all perishable items and unplugging the unit to allow the coils to cool and the ice to melt entirely.

Important Note: Never attempt to move a refrigerator immediately after unplugging it. If the internal frost is not fully defrosted and dried, trapped water will leak inside the moving truck, warping cardboard boxes and damaging wooden furniture packed nearby.

Once defrosted, wipe down all interior surfaces with a mixture of baking soda and warm water to eliminate moisture and prevent mold growth. For washing machines and dishwashers, run a short empty cycle with vinegar to clear out detergent residue, then disconnect the water hoses and drain any remaining water from the internal pumps into a shallow pan.

Securing internal components and moving parts

Every heavy appliance has loose parts that can crash around during transit if left unmanaged. Inside your oven, remove the wire racks; inside the microwave, take out the glass turntable. Pack these pieces separately in bubble wrap.

For larger appliances, secure all internal components firmly:

  • Refrigerators: Tape down all glass shelves, crisper drawers, and door bins with clean-removal painter's tape.

  • Washing Machines: Install shipping bolts (transit bolts) to lock the washing drum in place. Moving a washer without these bolts can permanently unbalance the suspension system.

  • Power Cords: Coil all electrical cords neatly and tape them securely to the back of each appliance to prevent tripping hazards.

Protecting exterior surfaces and structural glass

Once the internals are locked down, close the primary doors and wrap heavy-duty moving straps or high-grade stretch wrap entirely around the unit to keep the doors from swinging open.

To protect the sleek finish of stainless steel or integrated glass control panels, wrap the entire exterior in thick moving blankets. Secure the blankets tightly with packing tape, ensuring the tape only touches the blankets and never the direct surface of the appliance to avoid leaving sticky adhesive residue.

Safe loading and transit mechanics

When moving day arrives, always use a heavy-duty utility dolly equipped with safety straps to transport these units. Appliances should always be moved and loaded in an upright position; tilting a refrigerator completely flat can cause the cooling compressor oil to flow into the cooling tubes, which can permanently ruin the mechanism.

Once placed inside the moving truck, anchor the appliances tightly against the wall tracks using ratchet straps to completely eliminate shifting while on the road.
